I have battled Cystic Fibrosis since being diagnosed at 5 months old and became an insulin-dependent diabetic from age 23. From small chest infections to life-threatening pneumonia, I was no stranger to the hospital. After suffering a near-fatal cepacia bacterial infection, I required a life-saving double-lung transplant to survive. I received my transplanted lungs 5 days after being placed on the waiting list, but I wasn’t in the clear yet. I faced rejection on 3 separate occasions, I needed surgery to correct a bowel obstruction, and I faced another near-fatal cepacia bacterial infection that required another life-saving surgery called a Clagett open-window.
Since my transplant, I have lived an active and healthy lifestyle, trying new things I’ve always dreamed of but didn’t quite get the chance to accomplish yet. I competed in martial arts, winning medals and trophies; I always dreamed of riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle, which I now own; and I am currently preparing for my first bodybuilding show.
My double lung transplant has given me a second chance to appreciate all that life has to offer. I fell in love with a great girl that takes care of me; I own the motorcycle I’ve always wanted; I started a new career in fitness as a personal trainer and even got to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger; soon I will get to step on stage for my first bodybuilding show. I am extremely grateful that I received my organ transplant so I can continue to live life to the fullest.
